Fashion That Lasts, By Design

At Pieces of Jake, sustainability isn't a marketing buzzword—it's a lifestyle choice. In 2020 I made a decision to move away from buying "new" clothing and now 99% of my own wardrobe comes from Thrift shops and Re-commerce marketplaces. That philosophy gave birth to Pieces of Jake, where every curated piece is a statement against throwaway culture and a vote for style and quality that endures.

My Commitment to Circular Fashion

Rescue & Restore

I hunt down the best 90s-2000s vintage pieces and give them the care they deserve. Every item is thoroughly inspected, cleaned, and when needed, expertly repaired to ensure it's ready for many more years of wear. Damaged items beyond repair that have no real archival value are often salvaged for textiles and then reworked into upcycled pieces.

Eco-Conscious Cleaning

All garments are laundered using Canadian-made Tru Earth Laundry Detergent Strips—better for the environment and leaving clothes feeling fresh without the greasy residue that liquid detergents can leave behind. I never use fabric softeners as these reduce absorbency, cause damage to machines & fabrics, lead to skin Irritation and other health concerns, reduces performance of technical fabrics and have an environmental impact.

For spot cleaning and restoration, whilst there are exceptions where chemical cleaners are used, my first method is using natural solutions like rubbing alcohol, vinegar, baking soda, and castile soap rather than harsh chemicals. It's gentler on vintage fabrics and kinder to the planet.

Inspection & Refurbishment

Once acquired each item gets turned inside out and thoroughly inspected for flaws, defects or areas that may require attention prior to listing. During inspection, I look for:

• Loose over-threads along seams. These get snipped and secured as required.

• Bobbling. More common with synthetics or blended textiles, these ugly, uncomfortable balls of loose fiber get shaved using a specialized electric clothes shaver. These same fibres would otherwise clog your washing machine, dryer, or go directly into the water system. It's a small step that makes a big difference in garment appearance and environmental impact.

• Snags, holes and any other defects are either expertly and creatively repaired - or left as-is depending on the archival nature of the garment. For many vintage items, it's this 'patina' that makes each piece unique.

Upcycling with Purpose

Some pieces need more than a repair—they need reimagining. My 'Pieces by Jake' Upcycled Collection transforms damaged or incomplete garments into one-of-a-kind treasures, proving that creativity and sustainability go hand in hand.

Extending Lifecycles

By choosing vintage, you're keeping quality garments in circulation and out of landfills. Each purchase prevents new production, saves resources, and reduces fashion's environmental footprint. Items that don't make the cut for our store are donated to charity-based thrift stores for a new life elsewhere.

Thoughtful Packaging: Prime Cuts Deserve Better

Your purchase is prepared with the utmost care to arrive in pristine condition—but we do it without drowning the planet in plastic.

The majority of our packaging is paper or cardboard, recycled wherever possible. We prefer butcher paper for wrapping our 'prime cuts'—it protects your vintage finds beautifully while staying true to our low-impact values. Plastic is used only when absolutely necessary.

Care Guide: Make Your Vintage Last

Vintage pieces have already proven their durability—here's how to keep them going strong:

Washing

• Wash less frequently—spot clean when possible
• Turn garments inside out to protect prints and colors
• Use cold water and gentle cycles
• Consider eco-friendly laundry strips like Tru Earth
• Skip fabric softeners—they can damage vintage fabrics
• Air dry on a good quality structured clothes hanger to preserve fabric integrity

Storage

• Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight
• Use padded hangers for structured pieces
• Fold heavy knits to prevent stretching
• Keep sneakers stuffed with paper to maintain shape

Repairs & Maintenance

• Address small issues early—a loose thread today beats a tear tomorrow
• Use a fabric shaver to remove pilling and keep pieces looking fresh
• Find a trusted tailor or cobbler for professional repairs
• Embrace visible mending as part of your piece's story

The Impact of Choosing Vintage

When you buy vintage instead of new, you're making a real difference:

✓ Zero new production resources required
✓ No additional water, energy, or chemical use
✓ One less garment in a landfill
✓ Support for a circular economy
✓ Preservation of quality craftsmanship
✓ Reduced microfibre pollution through proper garment prep
